Farewell to a Legend: Remembering Steve Mackey, Bassist of Pulp

Pulp bassist Steve Mackey dies aged 56

The music world was devastated to hear the news of the death of Steve Mackey, bassist of iconic Britpop band Pulp, at the age of 56.

Mackey had been a beloved contributor to the band since 1989, playing on timeless hits such as “Common People,” “Disco 2000,” and “Lipgloss”. His wife Katie paid tribute to the NHS for their tireless work, and Jarvis Cocker, Pulp’s frontman, shared a moving photo of Mackey from their 2012 South American tour.

Mackey was an incredibly multi-talented musician, producer, photographer, and filmmaker, with a career that spanned decades. He collaborated with a range of artists, including MIA, Florence+The Machine and Arcade Fire, as well as directing campaigns for top brands and co-curating the Frieze Art Fair.

Pulp had recently announced a reunion tour that Mackey was planning to sit out, in order to focus on his other projects.

Despite his untimely death, Mackey’s legacy will live on. His contribution to music and art will be remembered, with Pulp set to embark on a 2023 reunion tour in his honour.
