Master of Puppets is a song of the American heavy metal band Metallica, released as a single on February 3, 1986. It is the lead track of the eponymous album, Master of Puppets, released on March 2, 1986. The song was written by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich.

The song is about a drug addict who is controlled by his drug and eventually dies from it. The title refers to the Hoffmann's tale in which the hero is controlled by puppets.

The song was very well received by the critics and was ranked by Rolling Stone magazine at position number 15 of their list of "100 best hard rock songs of all time".
