- Nothing Else Matters is a song by the heavy metal band Metallica, from their album Metallica (often referred to as the Black Album because of its all-black cover, except for a gray snake).
- The song remains one of the most famous of the band.
- This ballad differs from the usual compositions of the band. It begins with a long introduction played on the acoustic guitar. Its lyrics evoke, in a melancholic tone, independence and what is most important in life.
- The song contributed to the band's commercial success by opening the doors to a wider audience: it reached number 34 on the Billboard Hot 100 on May 2, 1992.
- It has been covered by many bands outside the heavy metal world.
- Some critics see Nothing Else Matters as a symbol of Metallica's shift to more commercial music, away from the harder, more thrashy sound of their early albums.
- James Hetfield (guitarist and singer of Metallica) wrote the song while he was on tour and away from his girlfriend (so close, no matter how far...).
- Bob Rock, the producer of the album, suggested to the members of Metallica to incorporate an orchestra in the song.
