Creedence Clearwater Revival released their song "Proud Mary" in January 1969. The song was written by John Fogerty and reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is an ode to the Mississippi River and the work of the dockworkers along its banks. Fogerty wrote the song in 1968 while on tour with his band in Europe. He later said the song was born out of his love for the rhythm and blues and soul songs he heard on the radio as a child.
