The song was written and composed by PJ Harvey while she was in a relationship with musician Nick Cave. The relationship was passionate and tumultuous, and Cave was often away on tours and recordings. Harvey said the song was a way for her to deal with the frustration and anger she felt toward Cave.

Rid of Me was released as a single in 1993, and reached number four on the UK singles chart. The album of the same name was a commercial and critical success, and was nominated for the Mercury Prize.
