Nirvana - Short Biography

Nirvana was an American rock band founded in 1987 in Aberdeen, Washington. It consisted of singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic, who were joined by drummer Dave Grohl in 1990. Their music mixed elements of punk rock and alternative rock, and their 1991 album Nevermind was a major commercial success. The band marked the beginning of the grunge scene and quickly established themselves as one of the most popular bands of the decade. After the critical and commercial success of their 1993 album In Utero, Cobain committed suicide in April 1994. The remaining members of the band broke up shortly after.

- "Something in the Way" is the twelfth song on Nirvana's Nevermind album.
- The last song on the original album, it contains a hidden track (Endless, Nameless) that starts at 14:35. On some reissues, they are integrated separately.
- The song tells the story of an outsider (perhaps a homeless person or someone who has been left behind) who lives under a bridge and experiences time with tame animals and, upon reflection, questions his situation.
- This melancholic and slow song, depressive and haunting, expresses the existential emptiness and wandering of the being. The latent and dark sadness of the music, whose minimalist guitar playing consists of the repetition of two chords, is reinforced by the presence of a cello. The issue of disillusionment, including social discrimination (and, by extension, the exclusion that can follow) and the lack of future prospects, is strongly suggested at the end of the chorus.
- According to legend, Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain slept for a time under a bridge over the Wishkah River near Aberdeen, which inspired the song.
- Fleeing the family disputes between his parents, he spent a lot of time there.
- This ballad, although technically simple (two chords that repeat throughout the song), was particularly difficult to record for the bass.
