The Carpenters - Short Biography

The Carpenters, an American vocal and instrumental duo consisting of siblings Karen and Richard Carpenter, were known for their distinctive, smooth musical style. During their 14-year career, they released 10 albums, numerous singles and several television specials. Karen sang contralto and Richard arranged and composed the music, until Karen's death in 1983.

"This Masquerade" is a song written by the American singer and musician Leon Russell in 1972. It was recorded for his album "Carney" and released as the B-side of the hit single "Tight Rope". The song gained popularity when it was covered by Helen Reddy and included in her album "I am Woman". The Carpenters then recorded their own version for their album "Now & Then" and released it as the B-side of their single "Please Mr. Postman". However, it was George Benson's version of "This Masquerade" that was the most successful, released on his 1976 album "Breezin'" and featuring Jorge Dalto on piano. Benson's rendition became his first big hit and is remembered for its smooth jazz sound.
