The song tells the stories of two people, Stephen and Sara. Stephen used to be optimistic and heroic, but after losing his family, he's become indifferent and isolated, seeing things out of the corner of his eye. Sara's partner struggled with alcoholism, but on weekends would lead a religious group, so she pretended everything was alright and spent their money to cope. Both Stephen and Sara are questioning whether their suffering is a test of faith or if they're being haunted by something sinister, but they feel better when they disconnect from their thoughts and emotions.
