"Daysleeper" is a poignant song by the legendary American alternative rock band REM. Released in 1998 as the first single from their eleventh studio album Up, the song explores the struggles of those who work nights, grappling with the challenges of a life out of sync with the rest of the world. Sung from the perspective of a worker corresponding with his co-workers, "Daysleeper" highlights the disorientation and loss of identity that can result from a lifestyle at odds with our natural circadian rhythms. Singer Michael Stipe was inspired to write the song after seeing a sign that said "daysleeper" on the door of an apartment in New York City.
