Mariah Carey is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Born on March 27, 1969, in New York, Carey began her career as a backup singer for Brenda K. Starr. She signed a recording contract with Columbia Records in 1988, and her eponymous debut album was released the following year. Carey became the first artist to have their first five singles debut at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. She has sold over 200 million records worldwide and won numerous awards, including five Grammy Awards. Carey is also known for her roles in films such as “Glitter” and “Precious.” In addition to her music career, Carey is an active philanthropist, supporting causes such as the Fresh Air Fund and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
