Serj Tankian is an Armenian-American musician, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, poet, and political activist. He was born on August 21, 1967, in Beirut, Lebanon, and moved to Los Angeles at the age of five. Tankian is best known as the lead vocalist of the Grammy Award-winning band System of a Down, which he formed in 1994. He has also released several solo albums, written musical scores for films and video games, and collaborated with several other artists. Tankian is also a co-founder of the social justice organization Axis of Justice and has been an advocate for human rights, environmental protection, and Armenian genocide recognition. In addition, he is also an author, having published a poetry book and co-authored a musical with Tony Award-winning playwright Steven Sater.
