Eddie Cochran, an American musician, singer, and songwriter, tragically died in an automobile accident at the age of 21. The accident occurred in the early hours of April 17, 1960, near Chippenham, Wiltshire, England.
Cochran, along with his fiancée Sharon Sheeley and fellow artist Gene Vincent, had been traveling in a taxi after performing at a concert in Bristol. The taxi, driven by George Martin, was en route to London when it suffered a blown tire on the A4 road, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
The out-of-control taxi collided with a lamp post, and all three passengers were thrown from the vehicle. Cochran suffered severe head injuries, while Sheeley sustained a broken pelvis. Vincent, though injured, managed to survive with minor injuries.
Cochran was immediately taken to St. Martin’s Hospital in Bath where he received emergency treatment. Despite the doctors’ efforts to save him, Cochran succumbed to his injuries and passed away the following day, on April 17, 1960.
His untimely death shocked the music industry and his fans worldwide. Cochran’s unique blend of rock and roll, blues, and country music had made him a rising star, and his influence can still be felt in the music industry today.
