How did Héctor Jorge Ruiz die?

Héctor Jorge Ruiz died on June 16, 2011.

At the age of 67
Héctor Jorge Ruiz, also known as Jorge Alberto Ruiz Massieu, was a Mexican lawyer and politician who served as the Secretary-General of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) from 1992 until his death in 1994. His death was a result of a tragic incident that occurred on September 28, 1994.

On that day, Ruiz was attending a political rally in Lomas Taurinas, a neighborhood in Tijuana, Mexico. As the crowd gathered to listen to a speech by Luis Donaldo Colosio, the PRI’s presidential candidate, a tragic turn of events occurred.

During Colosio’s speech, an individual later identified as Mario Aburto Martínez approached the stage and fired a gun at close range, aiming at Colosio. However, the bullet missed its intended target and struck Ruiz in the head instead. Chaos ensued as security personnel attempted to apprehend the assailant, and Ruiz was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital.

Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Ruiz’s injuries proved critical, and he passed away shortly after the shooting. His death not only marked a great loss for Mexican politics but also fueled conspiracy theories and raised questions about the motives behind the assassination.

Aburto was arrested at the scene and later convicted of both the murder of Colosio and the murder of Ruiz. Over the years, theories and speculation regarding the possible involvement of others have emerged, but the official report indicates that Aburto acted alone. The tragedy of Ruiz’s death remains a painful chapter in Mexican history, forever linked to the shocking assassination of Luis Donaldo Colosio.
