Ian Curtis, lead vocalist of the influential English post-punk band Joy Division, died by suicide on May 18, 1980, at the age of 23. Curtis had been struggling with personal and emotional difficulties throughout his life, primarily related to his marriage problems, his battle with epilepsy, and his deteriorating mental health.
