Jim Croce, an American singer-songwriter, died on September 20, 1973, in a tragic plane crash. He was only 30 years old at the time of his untimely death.
Croce had just finished a concert at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana, and was traveling to Sherman, Texas, for another performance the following day. He boarded a chartered Beechcraft E18S aircraft along with five other passengers, including his lead guitarist, Maury Muehleisen, and pilot Robert N. Elliott.
Unfortunately, the plane encountered heavy rain and foggy conditions while approaching the Natchitoches Regional Airport. The poor weather conditions made it difficult for the pilot to see the approaching tree line. Tragically, the aircraft crashed into a pecan tree just a mile away from the airport, exploding on impact.
The crash claimed the lives of all six people on board, including Croce and Muehleisen. The sudden and shocking death of Jim Croce devastated his family, friends, and fans around the world. He had only recently gained popularity and success with hits like “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” and “Time in a Bottle.”
