- Their most successful and best known recording is "A Whiter Shade of Pale", released in 1967, which has sold over 10 million copies.
- Their music is classified as psychedelic rock and proto-prog with influences from blues, R&B and soul.
- They are known for their baroque and classical influence.
- Procol Harum disbanded in 1977 but reformed in 1991.

Procol Harum singer and pianist Gary Brooker composed "A Whiter Shade of Pale" with the help of lyricist Keith Reid. The song was recorded in May 1967 and released as a single on June 10, 1967. The single became an instant hit, reaching number one on the UK charts on July 8, 1967 and remaining at number one for six weeks. It also reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.

"A Whiter Shade of Pale" is a song with a melancholy melody about a lost love. The lyrics evoke a woman who leaves a man and leaves him alone and desperate. The song includes several references to literature and mythology, including the Bible, Dante and Shakespeare.

The single was very well received by critics and was hailed as one of the best songs of 1967. It was named one of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" by Rolling Stone magazine and was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "500 Songs That Defined Rock."
