Singer and bassist Ian Fraser Kilmister, better known as Lemmy, composed "Ace of Spades" in 1980. The song was recorded for the eponymous album of the British rock band Motörhead, and was released as a single on October 24 of the same year. "Ace of Spades" became one of Motörhead's best-known songs, and was hailed by critics as a "rock and roll icon."

Lemmy composed "Ace of Spades" in one session, using a drum machine to create the bass line. He then recorded the song with the rest of the band in the studio. The song was inspired by the card game and the fact that Lemmy was a poker fan. Lemmy explained that the song was a metaphor for life, and that the cards were a way to represent chance and fate.
