The song "Beat It" was written and composed by Michael Jackson and produced by Quincy Jones. It was released on February 3, 1983 as a single and was included on the album Thriller, released on November 30, 1982.

The song was recorded in May 1982 at Record One studio in Los Angeles. Quincy Jones invited Eddie Van Halen to play guitar on the track, but Jackson declined, as he wanted the guitar to be played by Steve Lukather. Jackson then recorded the guitar track himself. The bass was played by Louis Johnson and the drums by Jeff Porcaro.

The video for the song, directed by John Landis, was shot in March 1983. It features Jackson and breakdancers competing in an abandoned factory. Jackson and the dancers were dressed by the costume designer of the film The Terminator.

The clip premiered on April 2, 1983 on MTV, and was broadcast later that week on U.S. television stations. It was very well received by the public and was nominated for seven MTV Video Music Awards, including Best Video of the Year. Jackson won three awards, including best choreographer.
