- Ella Fitzgerald was an American jazz singer.

- She was known for the purity of her tone and her ability to improvise.

- She began her musical career with the Chick Webb Orchestra.

- She left the orchestra in 1942 to begin her solo career.

- She recorded with Verve Records and collaborated with Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and The Ink Spots.

- She won 14 Grammy Awards and received the National Medal of Arts, the NAACP's inaugural President's Award and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

- She passed away in 1996 at the age of 79.
