- The Mamas & the Papas were a folk rock vocal group founded in Los Angeles, California.
- The group was active from 1965 to 1968 and was a major force in the 1960s counterculture music scene.
- The group consisted of John Phillips, Cass Elliot, Michelle Phillips and Denny Doherty.
- John Phillips arranged the group's vocal harmonies and adapted folk music to the new beat style of the early 1960s.
- Their sound had a lasting influence on the music and culture of the 1960s.

- It was first recorded in February 1931 by Ozzie Nelson and also by Wayne King and His Orchestra, with a voice by Ernie Birchill.
- A popular standard, it has been the subject of over 60 other versions.
- The song had its greatest chart success when it was covered in 1968 by Cass Elliot with the Mamas and the Papas.
- More than 40 other versions followed, including those by the Mills Brothers, Sylvie Vartan, Henry Mancini, The Beautiful South, Anne Murray, Erasure, Michael Bub and the NAC Orchestra.
