The song "Ebony and Ivory" was released in 1982 as a single by Paul McCartney with Stevie Wonder. It was released on March 29, 1982 as the first single from McCartney's third solo album, "Tug of War." Written by McCartney, the song aligns the black and white keys of a piano keyboard with the theme of racial harmony. It was a huge success, reaching number one in both the British and American charts, and was one of the best-selling singles of 1982 in the United States. During the apartheid era, the South African Broadcasting Corporation banned the song after Wonder dedicated his Best Original Song Oscar to Nelson Mandela in 1984.
