Mazzy Star is an American shoegaze rock band formed in 1989. The single "Fade Into You", released in October 1993, was the band's third and final single to reach the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number four. The song also became a hit in Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
The band was formed in 1989 by guitarists and singers Hope Sandoval and David Roback. The two musicians had met a few years earlier while in the band Opal. After leaving Opal, Sandoval and Roback began working together on a more personal musical project. They were joined by bassist Keith Mitchell and drummer Stanton Moore, and signed with the independent label Rough Trade Records.
The band's first album, She Hangs Brightly, was released in 1990. The album was well received by critics and helped the band gain some popularity in Europe. The band's second album, So Tonight That I Might See, was released in 1992 and reached number one on the UK indie charts. The single "Fade Into You" was released in October 1993 and reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100, making it their biggest commercial success. The song stayed in the top 40 for several weeks and became a hit in Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
The band continued to tour and record through the late 1990s, but never achieved the same level of success as "Fade Into You." After a long hiatus, Mazzy Star made a comeback in 2013 with the album Seasons of Your Day.
