The protagonist lives with three others and they work hard, often too hard to make it to Mass on Sundays. They live far away from a place called Clare and it feels like it's getting further away every day. Despite promising his partner Josephine he'd come back with money, it's hard to keep going and the only relief he finds is in drinking. Sometimes he imagines he hears music or sees horses dancing, but it's still a long way from Clare to where he is now.
