"Hard Knock Life" is a single released by American rapper Jay-Z on October 27, 1998, from his third album Vol. 2.... Hard Knock Life. The song contains a modified sample of "It's the Hard Knock Life" from the 1977 musical Annie. It was produced by 45 King and was Jay-Z's most commercially successful single at the time of its release. The Recording Industry Association of America certified the single gold in March 1999, and it reached platinum status on July 15, 2015. It was also nominated for best solo rap performance at the 41st Grammy Awards in 1999. The song reached #15 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #10 in countries such as Canada, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Ireland, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. It also reached the top 20 of the charts in Austria and Belgium.
