His bunkmate has malaria and they are organizing a search party for someone named Jeffrey Hardy. The protagonist asks his parents to take him home because he doesn't like camp and is scared of bears. He promises to behave and not make a mess. But then he says that things have improved and he wants his parents to ignore the letter and let him stay at camp.
