The song Higher Ground was written and composed by Stevie Wonder in 1973. It was recorded for his album Innervisions, released in 1973. The song was a commercial success, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. It was certified as a gold record by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 1974.

The song is about a religious theme, with Wonder seeking a higher level of spirituality. He wrote the song after hearing a sermon by Pastor Calvin Butts. The sermon was based on a Bible verse, Matthew 11:12, which states, "He who is lifted up will be brought low, and he who is brought low will be lifted up." Wonder said the sermon inspired him to write a song about spirituality and religion.

The song Higher Ground has been an inspiration for many other songs, including the Red Hot Chili Peppers song of the same name, released in 1989. The song has been covered by many artists, including Bob Dylan, Tina Turner, Usher, and John Legend.
