Etta James - Short Biography

- Jamesetta Hawkins, better known as Etta James, was an American singer who performed in a variety of genres, including gospel, blues, jazz, R&B, rock and roll, and soul.

- She began her career in 1954 and became famous with hits such as "The Wallflower", "At Last", "Tell Mama", "Something's Got a Hold on Me" and "I'd Rather Go Blind".

- James faced a number of personal problems, including heroin addiction, severe physical abuse and incarceration, before making a musical comeback in the late 1980s with the album Seven Year Itch.

- She has won six Grammy Awards and 17 Blues Music Awards.

- Ellington Jordan and Billy Foster co-wrote "I'd Rather Go Blind."
- The song was first recorded by Etta James in 1967.
- It has since been considered a blues and soul classic.
- Etta James wrote in her autobiography that she heard the song sketched by her friend Ellington "Fugi" Jordan when she visited him in prison.
- James then wrote the rest of the song with Jordan, but for tax reasons, she gave the writing credit to her partner at the time, Billy Foster.
- The song appears on the Tell Mama album and on the B-side of the single of the same name.
- Some critics considered "I'd Rather Go Blind" to be of such an emotional level that it is impossible to get enough of it.
