"I Saw the Light" was originally a country gospel song written by Hank Williams, inspired by a remark made by his mother as they arrived in Montgomery, Alabama. Williams recorded the song during his first session for MGM Records, and first released it in September 1948. Although not a big commercial success at first, the song became one of Williams' most popular and has since become a country gospel standard. It has even become the closing number of Williams' shows. The group Alabama covered the song in 2014.
