The protagonist is feeling disillusioned with the world around him. He sees the government giving speeches that everyone cheers for, and advertisements that show fake happiness. Sometimes these illusions are even better than the truth. He dreams about a man on a coin who has red eyes, and wonders why this man is in his dreams. He wants something real in his life, not the fake things that people try to give him. The only time he can truly be himself is when he is with his partner, she makes him forget about everything else. He feels trapped, like he is stuck in a vending machine and needs someone to help him escape. But when his partner comes to him, she looks so beautiful and unattainable, it makes him feel tired. He wishes she would be more vulnerable with him. The protagonist talks about how television is the best friend of children, and how the newspaper tells stories of what people can become. He gives a gruesome example of a child stabbing his sister and then changing the channel. He compares his own life to a thriller movie, with a glamorous film star from Silicon Valley meeting a millionaire who is a white person pretending to be black. The protagonist wants something real in his life, not the fake things that people try to give him.
