Prince Rogers Nelson (1958-2016) was an American singer-songwriter, musician, and producer widely regarded as one of the greatest of his generation. Prince's song "If I Was Your Girlfriend" was the second single from his 1987 double album Sign o' the Times. The song was a hit in the UK, but had only a minor impact in the US. It was originally part of the 1986 Camille project, which was to be released as Prince's alter ego, Camille. The song is delivered from the perspective of an androgynous man to a woman, and examines the possibilities of a closer relationship if he were her platonic girlfriend. According to Trouser Press, the song "redefines a relationship in a surprisingly mature way." It is believed that the song was inspired by the close bond between Prince's girlfriend and fiancée at the time, Susannah Melvoin, and her twin sister Wendy, which triggered feelings of jealousy in Prince.
