The song is about a group of people who set sail from Ireland to New York with a cargo of various goods on a large ship called the Irish Rover. The crew members are from different parts of Ireland and have different personalities - some are lazy, some are drunk and some are fighters. After sailing for seven years, the ship gets lost in fog and eventually crashes into a rock. Everyone on board dies except the protagonist and the captain's dog. However, the dog also dies and the protagonist becomes the last surviving member of the Irish Rover.
