The protagonist feels like life is draining him and making him forget things. He used to feel so strong and certain, but now he feels cold and logical. He's content with his life of drinking too much and not believing in anything, even though he knows he's lying to himself by saying it's for the best. His friend Nate Ruess joins in the chorus to describe their fear of eternity and how they were saved by grace but destroyed by naivety. In the end, they realize they're holding themselves back and waiting for something that will never come.
