The song tells the story of Johnny, who wakes up early one morning to go and hunt deer in the woods with his two dogs. His mother warns him not to go to the woods, but Johnny goes anyway. While in the woods, he shoots a deer and attracts the attention of the King's foresters. They shoot and injure him, but Johnny manages to kill all of them except for one. Unfortunately, Johnny's dogs are killed and he himself is left badly injured.
