- Charles Trenet was born on May 18, 1913 in Narbonne, France.
- At the beginning of his career, he was nicknamed "le fou chantant".
- He wrote nearly 1,000 songs, many of them poetically inspired.
- His most famous songs include "Y'a d'la joie", "Ménilmontant", "Douce France", "La Mer" and "L'Âme des poètes".
- Trenet was very popular in France and beyond the French-speaking world.

- In 1943, Charles Trenet, Roland Gerbeau, Léo Chauliac and Charles Trenet's secretary were on a train from Montpellier to Perpignan.
- Trenet observed the landscape and was inspired to write a song entitled "La Mer".
- The melody of "La Mer" comes from a 1938 song called "Heart and Soul".
- Trenet did not think the song was very good and did not record it immediately.
- In 1945, Roland Gerbeau recorded the song with Renée Lebas.
- In 1946, Trenet is convinced to record the song by Raoul Breton.
- Léo Chauliac was replaced by Albert Lasry, who produced the "symphonic" orchestration.
- The song is a huge success.
