The song tells the story of a man who meets a transsexual woman in a bar and falls in love with her. Davies said the inspiration for the song came from an encounter he had with a transgender woman in a bar in Cologne, Germany. The song was performed by the band on their 1970 European tour, and has been covered by many artists, including David Bowie, Blondie and The Pretenders.
