The title of the song, "Losing My Religion", refers to an English expression meaning "to lose one's temper". The song was written by the band's lead singer, Michael Stipe, and guitarist Peter Buck. Stipe said the song was inspired in part by the book "The God of Small Things," by Arundhati Roy.

The song was released in 1991 and reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the one and only R.E.M. single to reach that position. The song received critical acclaim and was named "Song of the Year" at the 1992 Grammy Awards.
