- Los del Río is a duo of artists, Antonio Romero and Rafael Ruiz, who compose together since the 1960s.
- In 1992, while the group was touring Venezuela, they were spotted by the impresario Gustavo Cisneros at a party attended by the president Carlos Andrés Pérez.
- A flamenco dance teacher, Diana Patricia Cubillán Herrera, gave a demonstration, and the group's singer, Romero, improvised a little song to encourage her: Dale a tu cuerpo alegría, Ma'dalena, que tu cuerpo e' pa' darle alegría y cosa' buena',.
- On this basis, the duo wrote a song about a woman named Macarena.
- Originally, Los del Río used the name "Magdalena" for their song, but they changed it later because a song by the Spanish singer Emmanuel had become popular under the same name.
