He joined a crew of people who loved to pump and they worked together to keep the ship afloat. They encountered rough seas in the Gulf of Mexico, but the other pirates were too scared to pump the water out. The protagonist took on the task alone and pumped all through the night. Finally, when daylight came, the ship was saved and the crew celebrated, but sadly, the protagonist had pumped so much that he died.
