Chuck Berry - Short Biography

- Charles Edward Anderson Berry was an American singer, songwriter and guitarist who pioneered rock and roll.
- Dubbed the "father of rock and roll," he refined and developed rhythm and blues into the main elements that made rock and roll distinctive.
- He wrote about teenage life and consumerism, and developed a style of music that included guitar solos and showmanship.
He was born into a middle-class black family in St. Louis and became interested in music at an early age.
- While still in high school, Berry was convicted of armed robbery and sent to reform school, where he was held from 1944 to 1947.

The song is about a love story both wonderful and tragic, inspired by a true story Berry overheard during a gas station stop. The song was recorded in a Chicago studio on March 21, 1955 and released as a single on May 2, 1955. "Maybelline" was a commercial success, reaching number eight on the Billboard Hot 100, and became one of Berry's best known songs.
