- She is a singer, songwriter, musician, television producer and actress.
- She is best known for her work in the field of country music.
- She has won numerous awards, including the Grammy Award and the Country Music Association Award.
- She has been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Grand Ole Opry.

- The song is about her father, Jacques Serf, who died in 1959.
- Serf had left Paris a decade earlier without being heard from, and Barbara did not learn of his death until she was 21.
- Serf had a history of mental illness and alcoholism, and led a marginal and solitary life.
- Barbara forgave her father in her 1998 memoir, "He Was a Black Piano..."
- She began writing the song the day after her father's funeral, and finished it nearly four years later.
- The song was released on her album "Dis, quand reviendras-tu?".
- A street in Nantes was named after her father in 1986, 20 years after his death.
