"Near Wild Heaven" is a popular song by American rock band R.E.M. It was released in August 1991 as the third single from their seventh studio album, Out of Time (1991). This song is unique in that it is the band's first single with lyrics co-written and sung by bassist Mike Mills. The lyrics were a collaboration between Mills and singer Michael Stipe. The song reached #27 on the UK singles chart, but was not released in the US. Mike Mills previously wrote the lyrics for the single "(Don't Go Back To) Rockville" and sang the cover of "Superman," but with "Near Wild Heaven" this is the first time he has sung his own work on a single.
