The song tells the story of two people who were once married, but separated and went their separate ways. The lyrics are also about two brothers who went to war, only one of whom survived and eventually forgot what they were fighting for. The protagonist remembers his past love and struggles to let it go, wishing they had stayed together. The overall message is that sometimes things happen and there is nothing you can do about it.
