On March 21, 2019, Lil Nas X released a song called "Old Town Road," which went viral on social media due to its style mixing rap and country. The song was initially released on the online music platform SoundCloud, before being picked up by Lil Nas X's label, Columbia Records. "Old Town Road" was written by Lil Nas X and produced by DJ and music producer Bobby Raps.

The song was so successful that on April 5, 2019, Lil Nas X announced on Twitter that he was working on a remix of "Old Town Road" with rapper Billy Ray Cyrus. The remix was released on May 5, 2019 and was accompanied by a music video featuring both artists. The remix was even more successful than the original version of the song, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
