The song Peggy Sue was written by Buddy Holly and J.P. Richardson, aka "The Big Bopper". It was first recorded by Holly in July 1957 and released as a single in September of that year.

The title refers to a former girlfriend of Holly's, Peggy Sue Gerron. Holly and Gerron dated during high school and broke up shortly after graduation. However, they remained friends and Gerron became the first woman to write a song about Holly, "Peggy Sue Got Married."

The song was a commercial success, reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100, and was Holly's second top 40 single, following "That'll Be the Day." Due to its success, "Peggy Sue" was included on the album "Buddy Holly," released in February 1958.

"Peggy Sue" has been covered by many artists, including Buddy Knox, Jerry Lee Lewis, Waylon Jennings, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton. In 1986, "Peggy Sue" was ranked #34 on the Top 500 songs of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.
