The Marvelettes - Short Biography

- The Marvelettes were a popular American girl group of the early to mid 1960s.
- The group originally consisted of five members: Gladys Horton, Katherine Anderson, Georgeanna Tillman, Juanita Cowart and Georgia Dobbins.
- Georgia Dobbins was replaced by Wanda Young before the group signed its first contract.
- They were the first successful Motown Records group after the Miracles.
- They achieved success with the 1961 single, "Please Mr. Postman," which was the first number one single recorded by an all-female vocal group and the first by a Motown group.

The song Please Mr. Postman was written by Georgia Dobbins, William Garrett, Freddie Gorman, Brian Holland and Robert Bateman. It was first recorded by the girl group The Marvelettes in 1961. The single peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the first Marvelettes single to reach number one. It was also the first Motown Records single to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

According to Dobbins, the inspiration for the song came from an incident where she had been waiting all day for a package that never arrived.

The Marvelettes recorded Please Mr. Postman in April 1961, under the direction of Brian Holland and Robert Bateman.

Please Mr. Postman was a commercial and critical success, and was hailed as one of the Marvelettes' best songs. The song was certified as a gold record by the Recording Industry Association of America in 1963. In 1998, Please Mr. Postman was ranked number 333 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest songs of all time.
