- In 2000, Adams left Whiskeytown and released his first solo album, Heartbreaker, to critical acclaim.

- The album was nominated for a Shortlist Music Award.

- The following year, his fame increased with the release of the gold-certified UK album Gold, which included the single "New York, New York."

- During this time, Adams worked on several unreleased albums, which were collected into a third solo album, Demolition.
