The protagonist feels sad and bored, and talks to herself about it. Even though everything is going well, she feels like she doesn't belong and is a lonely clown. But it's good to know that her partner loves her, and when she feels down, she runs to him. Rainy days and Mondays always make her feel that way, and it has happened before.

Although it did not reach number one, "Rainy Days and Mondays" was certified gold by the RIAA. It is also worth noting that this song was the fourth Carpenters single to reach number one on the Adult Contemporary Singles Chart. Surprisingly, the song did not chart in the UK until 1993, where it peaked at #63 after being re-released. With its melancholy lyrics and soothing melody, "Rainy Days and Mondays" is a timeless classic that continues to resonate with audiences today.
