Nirvana - Short Biography

Nirvana was an American rock band founded in 1987 in Aberdeen, Washington. It consisted of singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic, who were joined by drummer Dave Grohl in 1990. Their music mixed elements of punk rock and alternative rock, and their 1991 album Nevermind was a major commercial success. The band marked the beginning of the grunge scene and quickly established themselves as one of the most popular bands of the decade. After the critical and commercial success of their 1993 album In Utero, Cobain committed suicide in April 1994. The remaining members of the band broke up shortly after.

- "Rape Me" is a song by the American rock band Nirvana, written by singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain.
- It is the fourth song on the band's third and final studio album, In Utero, released in September 1993.
- The song's lyrics caused controversy even before its official release.
- The band had wanted to perform it during their performance at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards, but according to Nirvana manager Danny Goldberg in his 2019 biography on Cobain, Serving the Servant, MTV president Judy McGrath was concerned that the song "made it seem like MTV was normalizing rape."
- Goldberg recalled reminding McGrath on the phone of "Cobain's commitment to feminism" and assuring her that "Rape Me" was an anti-rape song, like "Polly" on Nevermind, but said McGrath "disagreed" and wanted the "Rape Me" song to be released.
