The song was a commercial success, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and number one in Canada. In France, it was the fourth best-selling single of 1962.

Orbison wrote the song after divorcing his first wife, Claudette. The song is about the pain and sadness Orbison felt after the divorce. The original lyrics of the song were more desperate and sad than the ones that were eventually released. Orbison later changed the lyrics to make them more upbeat and hope that people could relate to the song.
