- Roy Orbison was an American singer, songwriter, and musician known for his passionate singing style, complex song structures, and dark, emotional ballads.
- He was born in Texas and began singing in a rockabilly and country-and-western band as a teenager.
- He was signed by Sam Phillips of Sun Records in 1956, but had his greatest success with Monument Records.
- From 1960 to 1966, 22 of Orbison's singles reached the Billboard Top 40.

The song Crying by Roy Orbison was written in 1961 by Orbison and Joe Melson. It was released in 1962 on the album Crying. The song was a commercial success, reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and number one in Canada. In France, it was the fourth best-selling single of 1962.

Orbison wrote the song after divorcing his first wife, Claudette. The song is about the pain and sadness Orbison felt after the divorce. The original lyrics of the song were more desperate and sad than the ones that were eventually released. Orbison later changed the lyrics to make them more upbeat and hope that people could relate to the song.
