- "Sadeness" is a song by Enigma, from the 1990 album MCMXC a.D.
- The idea for "Sadeness" came when Michael Cretu saw a French TV show about the Marquis de Sade, where several people were discussing him, asking for example if he was a pervert or a religious man and just disappointed with the moral attitude of the people at that time.
- The musician added about the origins of the title: "Maybe he wanted to punish them, and that's why he started to become the father of sadism".
- Cretu found it interesting to reflect on the paradox of church and sexuality.
- "Sadeness" speaks of sexuality from a questioning of the sexual desires of the Marquis de Sade.
- The song, a mixture of pop and Gregorian chant, is written by Michael Cretu, the producer, Frank Peterson, his assistant collaborator, and David Fairstein using two languages: Latin and French.
- The Latin part of the text includes a quotation from Psalm 24:7-8, which is in fact an excerpt from the song Procedamus in pace! on the 1976 album Paschale Mysterium recorded by the Capella Antiqua of Munich, originally used without permission.
- Cretu and Peterson used pseudonyms - Curly M.C for the former, F. Gregorian for the latter.
- On the album MCMXC a.D., the title is the first part of the title Principles of Lust, then in the third and last part called "Sadeness" (cover).
- In some countries, the title is sometimes spelled "Sadness".
